50connect Chat Room: A User Guide
A step-by-step guide to using the 50connect Chat Room.
Make friends in our Chat Room.
How To Get Started
Begin by going to this web link - http://chat.50connect.co.uk/.
When you go to this link, you will see this Welcome screen appear.
You can tick 'Login as Guest' and click 'Login' to use the Chat Room as a Guest.
However, to make the most of the Chat Room and get to know other 50connect chatters, you will need to register. To do this, click 'Register' underneath the 'Login' button.
Register
Type in the name you want to be known by in the 'Username' box, choose a password that will be difficult for other people to guess but easy for you to remember - if you do forget it you can retrieve it using the 'Lost Password' link on the Welcome screen - and enter your email address - this is for administration only and will not appear on the Chat Room.
Tick the box to show that you have read and agree to the Chat Room terms of use. Then hit 'Register Details'.
Chat
Once you have registered, you can login and begin chatting. The conversation appears in the main box.
User List
The right box allows you to see who else is in the Chat Room. This section displays details about the chat room you are in and all other room users.
Administrators and Moderators are marked with the symbols (A) or (M).
Room List
To enter any additional chat rooms, select a room from the drop-down room list and click 'Go!'.
Send Message
To send a message to other chat room users, type your message in the message box as shown above and click the 'Send' button.
The buttons in the bottom box around the messagebar are your personal controls although you probably won't use all of them, all the time.
Avatars
This feature allows you to display an avatar, which is a small picture, next to your name and chat messages. To choose an avatar, click the avatar button and a window will appear with a preset selection of avatars. Click the avatar you would like to use.
Text Styles
To change your text style, just like a Microsoft Word document, select an option in the main chat room as shown in the picture above. Each opens up a drop-down menu.
Font - Choose a typeface that's easy to read, or attractive.
Style - Make your text bold or italic or underline it.
Colour - This icon changes the colour of your text. Click on it for a selection of colours.
Size - Increase the size of the writing.
Smilies/Emoticons
This icon opens up your expressions so you can smile, cry or frown, like you can on MSN Messenger. To add a smilie/emoticon to your message, click the smilie/emoticon button and a window will appear with a preset selection of smilies/emoticons. Click the smilie/emoticon you would like to add to your message.
IRC Type Commands
You can type commands in the messagebar to help you communicate with, or block, your fellow chatters.
Ignore Someone
In the message bar, type '/block username' (without the quotes). This command allows you to block a user from contacting you and stops any messages by this user from appearing in the main chat window.
Unblock Someone
In the message bar, type '/unblock username' (without the quotes). This command allows you to unblock a user you had previously blocked.
Set Your Status
In the message bar, type '/status message' (without the quotes). This command allows you to change your user status in the userlist. Example: type '/status brb' (without the quotes) to change your status in the userlist to 'username (brb)'. You can type any custom message to appear as your status (example: '/status on the phone').
Do An Action
In the message bar, type '/action message' (without the quotes). This command allows you to add fun action messages. Example: Type '/action files around the room' (without the quotes) and a message will appear in the main chat window informing other users that 'username flies around the room'.
Private Chat
This allows you to chat privately (pvt is also an abbreviation for this) with another user. To send private messages, enter the username of the person you want to private with in the box as shown in the picture above. Then type your message and press 'Send'. You can use the Private Box to chat with your chosen friends without everyone else being able to see.
Auto Scroll
To enable/disable auto scrolling of the chat screen, click the box next to the text 'Auto Scroll'. Having auto scroll on means the page will automatically move up to show new messages as they appear.
Transcripts
This feature allows you to view a history of all current chat messages, so you can catch up if you come into a conversation late.
Disconnect
This button will log you off from your current chat session.
Help
This icon takes you to the Chat Room's User Help Section, for easy reference while you are using the Chat Room.
That's it! If you need any further information please email admin@50connect.com.
