A Cretan Retreat

Until Greece joined the EC no foreigners were allowed to buy property in the Greek islands. They were considered to be strategically sensitive and there are still areas on Rhodes and Crete where only the Greeks can buy. But today, provided you are an EC citizen, you can purchase.

Many Cretans are property rich. They may build a new home and move out of the old one or be left an old property and just hang onto it, even though it may be derelict. As a result, lovely old homes were just rotting away before the government passed a law three years ago which stated that if a Greek owned property assessed as being worth more that £120,000 then they would be liable for tax. It made sense for them to start selling off their houses which means that today there are some wonderful properties on the market.

The country offers stunning scenery, a friendly populace and is virtually unspoilt by mass tourism. In the South the climate is superb with over 330 days of sunshine every year.

Oonagh Karanjia of Crete Property Consultants says," Crete is the largest and most southerly of all the Greek islands and is noted for its exceptionally good weather. Purchase tax has been reduced from starting at 9% to starting at 7% and with prices in a wide range to suit all pockets this really is the time to consider Crete for a second home".

If you need help moving then a well established removal company can alleviate any fears.

Bishops Move Group, an international removal company and founder member of BAR Overseas can organise door to door moves from the UK to the Greek Islands through its European office in London and agents in Athens

All consignment to Greece, the Greek Islands and Crete are fully export packed due to the length of journey and handling in Greece. Full or part load consignments can be organised by road or by sea container.

There are no customs formalities for road removals. Seafreight consignments have to go through customs clearance at the port of arrival accompanied by a detailed inventory and a T2 customs form.
Advice can be given from the head office in London or any of its 22 locations nationwide.
