The secret to finding the perfect hobby in later life

Live your TrueAge with Seven Seas’ top tips.

Sue, TrueAge

There are many reasons why people don’t take up new hobbies or indulge their passions – age being one of them. But here at Seven Seas we believe TrueAge has nothing to do with our biological age, instead, it’s the age we feel.

Hobbies are a great way to relieve stress, express creativity and also meet new people. So, whatever your age, it’s time to focus on your wellbeing…

Do your research

No one hobby fits all, so it’s important to do your research. Think back to when you were younger; did you have a hobby? Maybe you enjoyed drawing? Or dancing? It’s surprising how certain hobbies impact your overall health. For instance, if your hobby is animal-related, research shows that simply stroking an animal can help us to relax, reduce heart rate and lower blood pressure.[i]

The right fit

If you’re finding it hard to think of an activity you enjoy, ask friends and family for their advice. The key to finding the perfect match is to play to your strengths and do something that you already love. If you’re passionate about the community, there are many charities that welcome volunteers. Alternatively, reach out to local groups to see where you can offer support. People who regularly give up their time to help others have higher reported feelings of wellbeing[ii].

Challenge yourself

Hobbies add colour and variety to our lives and can help us to feel younger[iii]. Be open-minded and pick challenges that push you outside of your comfort zone in areas you want to develop. For instance, yoga can help fight stiffness, hardening of the arteries, hormonal fluctuations, depression and loss of bone density. Not only that, but you can start at any age[iv].

Use your brain

For years scientists have championed the power of the brain. Learning Italian, taking up the cello or even finding a new way to get to work can wake up sleepy brain cells. On top of this, a healthy balanced diet will fuel your mind. Stock up on blueberries, kale, avocados, coconut oil and nuts. Nicknamed ‘brain foods’ for good reason; these superfoods will actively top up your vitamin levels. Support your diet with supplements such as Cod Liver Oil as research has found Omega 3 fatty acids (DHA) can help to protect people from cognitive decline and dementia[v].

You're never too old to learn

Growing old is a journey. Don't limit yourself to doing the same exact things you've always done. Whether you decide to take up flower-arranging, cookery classes or bowls, be sure to live your TrueAge.
