Wisteria hysteriaPosted on: 12 May 2017 by 50connect editorial
With their beautiful colours and fragrant smell, here’s how you can ensure your Wisteria is the star of the show.
Wisteria hysteria is everywhere. These beautiful flowers are native to Japan and have been known to grow up to 20m high when they are trained against a wall. Here Wyevale Garden Centres provides expert advice on how to keep your Wisteria looking its best:
Pruning Wisteria is an important job, as it can easily become overgrown and damaged if it isn’t pruned often, though some people do prefer to leave their Wisteria to ramble. If you want to control the size of your Wisteria we recommend cutting back the stems twice a year (preferably in January and July) to avoid damage and encourage more buds to flower in the summer months.
Make it shine
Although Wisteria can grow in shaded areas, it is advisable to plant or place it in direct sunlight to enable steady progress. Grow your plant on the sunny side of the garden, and you will notice a difference in the health of your plant.
Wisteria requires a moist, rich soil to grow in so ensure you choose your soil wisely and regularly water to keep your plant lush and happy.
Keep it protected
Though Wisteria thrives best in the sunlight, harsh winters do not spell disaster for your plant. Help your Wisteria through the winter months with a little extra TLC by pruning any dead stems and providing extra soil protection so it’s ready to bloom in the spring.
Follow these tips and you will be rewarded with gorgeous blooms that look beautiful all year round.
