Taking The 'P' Out Of Poodle

A poodle in mortar board and glasses on a book.

The class are set a pup of a detention for daring to challenge the teacher.

February 21st

Apparently there were a lot of disapproving noises when Josie set us our 'Poodle' themed homework last week. I wasn't personally aware of a rebellion among the ranks, but maybe I wasn't paying attention. The upshot was we all had to 'pay' for our misdemeanours and learn to do as we were told. 'Detention' of sorts, I suppose.

Hence, instead of getting a professional's work to pull apart, the first half of our 'lesson' was devoted to constructing a story containing the following four sentences:

"There was a yelp before the poodle stopped struggling...

"My poodle's never done that before said Lady Birtwhistle...

"And what exactly is it about poodles that makes you so sure they won't make a good story?” asked the Creative Writing tutor...

"And the screaming rang out. Oh no not the poodle..."

Well I ask you. The whole class dissolved into helpless giggles. I was expecting a detention to follow any minute. Very unfair, especially as I had done my homework. As had most of the others.

Anyway some of us read out ridiculous stories as merited by a ridiculous exercise. After all, this is school.

Andrea Kon is writing a weekly blog about her experience of going back to school. Check next week for her next installment.
