The Lessons Of Fairy Tales

Cinderella's Glass Slipper

Andrea Kon discovers why good fairy tales can offer wanna-be writers more than a mere moral lesson.

February 28th

We were into the realms of ‘fairy stories’ today, with a discussion on a simple Russian story that smacked of Aesops’ Fables.

It seemed a pointless exercise - after all, we are all aware of ‘tales with morals’, until we realised the underlying lesson was in the simplicity of the telling.   It’s that old ‘show not tell’ strategy again.

After each of the weeks’ four readings, we generally go round the class, one by one for ‘constructive criticism’.   I’m embarrassed to say my criticism was construed as not constructive.  I need to work out exactly what Josie means by ‘constructive’ criticism.
