When Teacher Is Away

A story about bricks

Teacher Josie was ill, and the class (almost) ran itself, with interesting results.

February 8th

Teacher Josie sent a message saying she was ill, and a very odd text for us to analyse – about toenails of all things.  We also have next week’s story subject, ‘absence’.

At first, we behaved a bit like naughty school-children, everyone chattering to everyone else on a social basis – until Christina and Lindsey took charge between them and decided that as we were all in attendance, we ought to get on with it.  How grown-up!

The debate on the toe-nails piece Josie provided, turned into a bit of a debacle with everyone reading the oddest things into what I thought was a rather ridiculous and silly piece.  I mean whoever describes toe-nails as ‘frail armaments’ and ‘ten pointless projectile heads’.  People read ‘pointless’ as two meanings.  I suggested that actually, toe-nails do have a raison d’etre – they protect the ends of your toes from suffering serious damage if stepped on just as finger nails protect the ends of your fingers.

I felt it was all a bit ‘let’s show who is intellectual, here’ – and intellectual is something I most definitely am not.  The readings went well, though only three because one was so long.   Josie’s lack of facilitation was very obvious, although we really didn’t do too badly considering.   The brick stories were interesting.  One, about a little dog who loved bricks, was very sweet.  One I couldn’t understand at all and the third was part of a much longer story about a house build over a state boundary somewhere in N.America.  Interesting concept.  I ended up writing a story about ice-cream bricks – no one said they had to be conventional bricks made of straw - but it remains in my stock pile.
