Coronation Street legend Liz Dawns has launched a new campaign to target Britain’s fifth biggest killer - Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
Do you have recurrent chest infections, a persistent cough, or feel breathless on a daily basis? If so, it could well be time to go for a simple ten-minute lung test at your doctors.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is an umbrella term for a group of lung conditions including emphysema and chronic bronchitis and is currently the fifth biggest killer in UK.
The British Lung Foundation’s annual Breathe Easy Week sees the launch of their Love Your Lungs Campaign (15th – 21st June) aims to get people experiencing symptoms such as a persistent cough, recurrent chest infections or breathlessness, and especially smokers and ex-smokers, to visit their doctor for a lung test so they can get diagnosed and treated earlier.
Coronation’s Street Liz Dawn, who starred as Vera Duckworth for 34 years, had to quit the show after being diagnosed with COPD five years ago. She is the BLF’s new Celebrity Ambassador. Raising awareness of the condition is vital as, according to research, 86% of the public have never heard of COPD.
Liz Dawn says: “I understand what it is like to have a lung condition and how it affects my life on a day to day basis.
“This is why I am supporting the British Lung Foundation’s ‘Love your lungs’ campaign to encourage anyone who thinks they may have symptoms such as breathlessness or a nasty cough to ask their doctor for a lung test”.
The earlier COPD is diagnosed the more treatable it is – in the video, Liz talks about her own illness and why she is supporting Breathe Easy Week.
