Christmas cheerPosted on: 02 December 2013 by Nick Gough
50connect wine expert Nick Gough looks forward to the festive season with a new concept from Domaines ABK6 - ICE Cognac.
The Christmas Fair season is upon us. I’ve done a couple already: this weekend found me struggling back from our local high street laden with cheeses, salamis and sweetmeats, but the big event for Drinks21 was the Taste of Christmas at Tobacco Dock. Our stand was mobbed from opening on Thursday evening to chuck out time on Sunday.
The focus of most attendee’s attention was ICE Cognac by ABK6. The Abecassis family (try pronouncing ABK6 in French) has been producing Cognac from their estates for generations. In recent years Domaines ABK6 have received many accolades for their Cognacs, culminating in the Excellence in Craftsmanship award in 2010 at the International Spirits Challenge, London.
ICE Cognac is a new concept in Cognac, specifically blended by the ABK6 cellar master to be served over ice. The ice lifts the aromas, with a steady progression from spice and vanilla, through stone fruits and orange peel to lemon sorbet and mint. It is smooth and all too easy to drink! It’s a great alternative to G&T as an aperitif and can be savoured with coffee and chocolates. At the fair, with the help of a mixologist, we were serving a range of cocktails too, which proved hugely popular. We think the bottle looks great too – very Christmassy!
For more traditional Cognac drinkers, the ABK6 range includes a VS – lightly spiced, fruity and elegant, a VSOP – complex, spicy and long, and an XO – rich, dense and smooth. For that very special occasion, two premium Cognacs, Extra and Liberté complete the range.
Any of these would make wonderful Christmas gifts – if you can resist opening them yourself. They can be found, along with all the Wine, Champagne and Malt Whisky you might need for the festive season at http://www.drinks21.com/
