Discover Stylish Skiing In SlovakiaPosted on: 27 January 2009 by Gareth Hargreaves
A skiing holiday in beautiful Slovakia won’t break the bank.
The UK is suffering from a weak sterling and the cost of skiing this season has reached levels not seen for years. But don’t despair; if you look a little further east you can find great skiing at a fraction of the cost of a break in the Alps.
Slovakia lies within the Carpathian mountain system, which after the Alps is the second largest and longest in Europe. The huge arc of the Carpathians begins beside the Danube, close to Bratislava, and stretches through the length of Slovakia, Ukraine and Romania.
Slovakia's dramatic High Tatras Mountains remain one of Europe's best kept skiing secrets, perfect terrain for families and novices and charming, if unpronounceable, resorts such as Strbske Pleso, Stary Smokovec and Tatranska Lomnica that provide an intriguing mix of old and new.
All ski resorts offer gondola, cable way, chair lift or drag lift. During warmer weeks in winter resorts have equipped the slopes with facilities for making artificial snow. Slovak ski slopes are also very popular also for snowboarding.
For more advanced skiers, the resort of Jasná in the Low Tatras Mountains has more challenging skiing and boarding including some great freeride terrain.
Both mountain ranges are a short transfer from the inbound airports of Kosice - 1 hour and Poprad - 10 mins with direct two-hour flights to each from Manchester and Luton airports.
Mountain Paradise offers a package for £399 including flights and transfers, seven-nights B&B accommodation, transfer to the slopes and a six day lift pass.
