Website of the week: Edgy ImagesPosted on: 13 April 2011 by Rhian Mainwaring
Make a piece of art out of your own photographs and bring old images back to life!
Like the highstreet, the internet is swamped with huge brands dominating the market, so we’ve been looking out for small websites offering a bespoke service without the big price tags. This week it’s Edgy Images.
Huw, 58 set up this new arm to his business last year, having worked as a graphic designer for the past 30 years in both London and Newcastle. Still running his own design agency in Hexham, Northumberland. Huw decided it was time to do something a little bit different. Utilising his experience as a creative director and enthusiasm for photography, he set up Edgy Images. “Friends down the pub would always ask me to make comedy cards, or posters for friends' birthdays and I’d decorated my house with my own images. I’ve always loved art and photography, so as well as running my design agency, I thought I’d set up shop. Mostly though, I just really enjoy it.”
So last year Huw opened the doors to Edgy Images and started “doing what he loves for a living”. We had a chat with Huw to see what motivated him to start a new business at 58? “It’s probably helped that I've worked for myself for nearly 20 years, but if you’re passionate about the idea, age shouldn't be a problem. The bank was also very helpful, but I'd been with them running a business for many years, so in that respect my age probably helped.”
So what’s the big plan? “Hopefully we can build up the business to a point where we can take someone on to run it, and then we can swan around the world enjoying ourselves!” And finally, are you glad you took the leap? “Absolutely, I love it and I feel 20 years younger (most of the time!)”
One of Huw’s specialities is restoring old images. “We spend most of our time staring at photographs on the back of an LCD screen,” he says, “but there’s something nostalgic about holding the real thing. Unfortunately over time they can tarnish, tear or lose their colour.” Transferring cherished family photo's to print or digital copy allows you to treasure the images and memories forever.
Huw prides himself on his bespoke service, so if you can’t see the style you’d like, give him a call to discuss what your requirements. He never goes to print without the all clear from his customer (something he learnt from years in advertising) and is happy to give you ideas or suggestions at what might look best. Because it’s a small outfit and the canvases are all hand-made there’s a 3 to 4 day wait for dispatch, but again, it’s always worth asking if it’s an emergency, he might just be able to help.
Whether it's your pets, a holiday landscape or family gathering join our photography group and upload your image. Huw's favourite three will then be invited to have their photograph turned into a piece of art, by having it put onto a canvas at a size of your choice.
