Create A Mini Meadow
A mini meadow will provide a home for grasshoppers and late summer frogs out hunting.
Below we describe a simple way to produce a meadow.
You will need the following:
6 ox-eye daisy plugs
6 field scabious plugs
6 meadow buttercup plugs
6 knapweed plugs
4 meadow cranesbill plugs
4 wild carrot plugs
Method
1. Choose a site - an area of lawn in a sunny spot about four metres in size, poor soil is great. Put a piece of rope out to mark out the edges in a naturalistic swoop. Inside this area, place your plug plants in random patterns.
2. Plant each plug with a narrow trowel by removing a circle of turf and replacing it with the plug. Water them after planting.
3. Mow your lawn – on the outside of the rope only.
4. Listen for the grasshoppers
Cost – about £30
