Win The Golden Pasty Trophy
Participate in the World’s Best Pasty Competition and win a weekend break at The Soar Mill Cove Hotel.
The Cornish Pasty Association (CPA) has put in a bid for Protected Geographical Indication Status for the ‘Cornish Pasty’. The Soar Mill Cove Hotel in Devon, home to the ‘Devonshire Pasty’, feels it’s time to throw down the gauntlet.
They want to prove that the ‘Devonshire Pasty’ is the tastiest. So, they have set up a competition to find ‘The World’s Best Pasty’. The battle is open to international and West Country competitors, the winner will receive a spectacular Golden Pasty Trophy and a weekend break for two at The Soar Mill Cove Hotel.
The humble pasty was a device invented to warm cold tin miners. The famous ‘crimp’, the wavy seam which holds the pasty together was the ideal handle for miners with dirty hands.
Judges, who will taste the pasties blind, include Carol Trewin, Food Editor of the Western Morning News, Kevin Viner of Viners Restaurant, Peter Gorton of the Horn of Plenty and bon viveur David Fitzgerald.
As they say when you drive over the Tamar into Cornwall "anyone can enter" but to return to Devon you have to pay.
“To be fair though as my old Cornish Aunt Nancy used to say, if you’re daft enough to leave Kernow then you deserve to pay," says Soar Mill Cove’s owner, Keith Makepeace. He will reimburse the £1 travel expenses to anyone crossing the bridge to enter the competition.
To enter the competition, download the entry form from the web www.soarmillcove.co.uk and send it with a photo of your pasty and the recipe, by 5th May, to:
