Life is not a rehearsal

This is the theme of Relate’s latest publication – The Relate Guide to Loving in Later Life. Author Marj Thoburn says ‘Sex is not just for the young and beautiful, simply because they have the attention of the press and broadcasting media. In fact sex dictated by the urgent haste of youth may be wasted on the young. A mature wine is more rounded and full-bodied than this year’s pressing!’

Today’s 50-plus generation are pioneers: let them claim the right to kiss goodbye to ageist taboos about sex. Baby-boomers, born just after the war and raised to the tune of Make Love, Not War, are not going to settle for the assumption that their sexual get-up-and-go trickles into the sand with the appearance of grey hair. Men and women in this age group have more time and freedom than any previous generation – and they are not going to spend it baby-sitting the grandchildren and reminiscing about the good old days. Yearning for intimacy is as profound at 50 as it is at 30, or 70, but the older you are, the more likely you are to have the skills and understanding it takes to make a relationship fulfilling. So celebrate your capacity for loving every day. And remember: Life is not a rehearsal – it’s the real thing.

The Relate Guide to Loving in Later Life: Intimacy in the Prime of Life by Marj Thoburn and Suzy Powling is published by Vermilion on 2 March 2000.
