Paris still tops for romance
Paris was clearly the most popular choice with 37%, followed by Venice (16%) and Rome (11%).
In contrast the streets of London are not thought to be quite so alluring, with only 1.5% saying they would go there for a romantic break. Other European cities such as Prague, Florence and Vienna also received a mention in the poll by Churchill Insurance.
David Hiddleston, the company's business development director, warned people not to forget about travel insurance. It is estimated that up to 20% of holidaymakers fail to take out insurance when they travel abroad, which could leave them exposed to hefty bills if they for medical treatment or stolen possessions.
The company recommended that travellers carry out simple precautions to deter thieves.
These include using a hotel safety deposit for valuables, avoiding carrying large amounts of cash and leaving expensive items such as jewellery at home.
But while many people may want to getaway for a romantic break this weekend, another recent survey showed that most people will instead receive just a "token" gift.
The Visa survey showed that only one in 100 women will get whisked off to Paris on St Valentine's Day, while one in seven will enjoy a candlelit dinner.
In contrast the majority of men surveyed said they would be spending less than £10 on their loved one, generally on either chocolate or flowers.
