Women Aren't That Different To Men
According to a new survey, women aren't that different to men after all when it comes to sex and the younger generation still have a lot to learn!
The survey conducted by Dorling Kindersley as part of the launch of Anne Hopper's new title, Sexopedia, has revealed some surprising facts.
Squashing the popular belief that men are more interested in sex than women, the survey showed that a similar number of both men and women felt sex was either very or quite important (men 85%, women 80%) in their relationships. Almost twice as many women owned a sex manual of some kind compared to men (25% compared to 16%), showing their desire to be more adventurous in the bedroom. Both the men and women who owned a manual thought using it would be a bit fun, but surprisingly many more women thought it would provide lots of new ideas for their sex lives (26% compared to 21%), and, more men than women thought a manual would allow them to be more 'open about the physical side' of their relationship (14.2% compared to 10.5%).
Interestingly, women (15.5%) are more likely to use a manual after sex, compared to only 3% of men. Could it be that women like to evaluate their partner's performance afterwards or are perhaps looking for further satisfaction? The fairer sex also felt braver when it comes to buying sex manuals: over 40% of women who own a manual bought it from a bookshop, whereas men seem to favour buying them anonymously by mail-order or online.
The survey also reinforces what we already know at 50 Connect. When it comes to age, 55.4% of 55+ age group felt that sex was still either a very or quite an important part of their relationship. 16% of 55+ owned a sex manual, with 75% using it before sex and 8.3% using it during sex.
In fact, it's the 25-44 age group who come off worse in most areas of the survey. Out of all the age groups they felt least comfortable talking about sex, and over a third (33.9%) felt the only way they could talk about it with their partner was after having a few drinks.
Anne Hooper, author of Sexopedia and leading sex therapist says, "Women have been doing a lot of catching up with men recently with regards to sexual lifestyle. They are financially independent these days and much more self-confident as a result. Whereas in the past, they would have waited to be asked, they now believe in being direct. They take the lead in dating, in initiating sex and appear, in their purchase of sex manuals, to have taken responsibility for at least 50% of the sexual knowledge needed in a sex relationship."
"This is in direct contrast to 20 years ago when they expected their men to know everything about making love for the very good reason that they knew nothing. How times have changed!"
