The wild and wacky World Mountain Bike Bog Snorkelling Championship returns to mid Wales

If you’re looking for a unique, wacky and physically challenging event this weekend, we’ve found something just for you.

The World Mountain Bike Bog Snorkelling Championship returns to mid Wales and if you fancy cycling along the bottom of a 6ft deep peat bog, wearing a mask and snorkel then this should be right up your street.

The Championship returns on the 5th July with the winner being decided by who gets back in the quickest time, but competitors don’t use your average household bikes.

The bikes used are specially prepared with a lead filled frame and water filled tyres to ensure grip on the pond bottom. The snorkeller/ cyclist also wears a lead weight belt to avoid floating off the bike and of course there are scuba divers on hand for safety purposes.

Bog Rescue Competitors must not use conventional swimming strokes and should rely on flipper power alone to see them home.

The World Mountain Bike Bog Snorkelling Championship first took place in 2000 and although no event was run in 2001, since then, it has been an annual event.

It’s £20 to enter and proceeds from the championship go to a local charity each year.
