The Heart Of The Dales
The newest volume in the enormously popular Dales series from Gervase Phinn.
Gervase Phinn’s books of reminiscences about life as a school inspector in the Yorkshire Dales have won him legions of fans.
The first volume, The Other Side of the Dale, published in 1998, went on to sell 150,000 copies, delighting readers with tales of school life as Gervase started out. Each book since has hit the bestseller lists, and Gervase regularly sells out venues across the country for his popular one-man theatre tour, An Evening with Gervase Phinn.
In The Heart of the Dales we rejoin his colourful cast of characters, including the mostly mad staff at County Hall and Christine Bentley, head teacher of Winnery Nook School and now Gervase's wife and mother of their son.
But above all, it is the children that Gervase meets - with their astonishing talent for philosophy and their ability to charm and floor the school inspectors with innocent ease - that continue to steal the limelight.
Gervase Phinn has an extraordinary talent to entertain, and his latest instalment to the Dales series is as heart-warming, wry, and laugh-out-loud funny as his previous instalments. In fact, there are many who consider it his best yet.
Gervase Phinn leads a busy life: he is a teacher, freelance lecturer, author, poet, school inspector, educational consultant, visiting professor of education, and public speaker - and above all, a family man.
He taught English in a range of schools for fourteen years before becoming an education advisor and school inspector. Gervase now tours the country as both an educational and after-dinner speaker. He has made numerous television and radio appearances and has written a number of academic books as well as children’s poetry and fiction for Puffin.
He is best known for his best-selling autobiographical Dales novels: The Other Side of the Dale, Over Hill and Dale, Head Over Heels in the Dales, and Up and Down in the Dales, all of which are published by Penguin.
He is also a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
Gervase is married and a father of four. He lives near Doncaster.
The Heart of the Dales, by Gervase Phinn, published by Penguin Books, is available at all good bookshops, RRP £7.99, or online from Amazon for £3.99.
