Utter Confusion
A simple lack of agreement.
A simple sequence:
S W N E
1H dbl redbl pass
pass ?
led to a -1320 score at pairs when as the doubler I passed because I had nothing more to say.
My partner believed it was never right to play in 1H redoubled even holding Q J 10 9 8 x of hearts so his pass was an instruction for me to start a scramble leading to an invetiable penalty double after advertising a scramble situation.
His hand was:
8 6 3
Q 10 2
ont size="2">
7 6 4 3
9 7 2
To me it was obvious he had a powerful heart holding and had passed for penalties as from my point of view it was his job to locate the corrrect strain and possibly the correct level.
A simple 1 spade bid would have made 6 tricks and even a 2 diamond bid would have led to a 300 point penalty only if doubled or more likely the opponents making 3NT with an overtrick.
My partner saw the error of his ways when I suggested that his scramble approach required me to break the first rule of bidding - by bidding my hand twice and excluded the possibility of penalising 1H redoubled.
Now we have an agreement we will not suffer such a poor score for the same reason. Are you sure you and your partner are on the same wavelength in this situation? Or perhaps as we did, you might give away a slam score on a game hand.
Enjoy your bridge.
