Join Your Local Genealogy Society

gene97P

It doesn't matter if your ancestors aren't from the area you currently live in.  There are a whole host of reasons to join your local genealogy society, and here's just five of them!

Meet Others Who Share Your Interest
For me, the most enjoyable aspect of genealogy is meeting other people who share your interests.  Not only will you be able to talk to them about your hobby, you might just make some lifelong friends along the way.

Learn New Research Skills
With weekly guest speakers and workshops, you will soon learn new research skills, discover new sources and learn how to structure your research methodically to cover all eventualities.

Discover More About The Locality You Live In
Even if your ancestors aren't from the area you live in, you'll still learn about the local history of your area and besides, a fellow member might have an ancestor who worked in the same trade as your ancestor.  You'll be able to compare notes and see how their lives differed because of geographical difference and local customs and laws.

Get To Grips With Old Documents
You will become more familiar with old handwriting, the style they are written in and realise that there's much more to reading old documents than you first thought.  And, of course, there's always someone on hand to help you out when you get stuck.

You Can Get As Involved As You Want To
If one weekly meeting isn't enough for you, the opportunity to become more involved is there.  You can help organise computer groups, volunteer to answer enquiries received by the society or arrange excursions.
