Discovery Channel: History Night Season
The New Year has seen some fantastic and thought provoking programming added to Discovery Channel on Wednesday nights, following the channel’s launch of ‘History Night’.
This new strand looks at some of the most significant times in our history and kicked off with the fascinating landmark series Monarchy (running until 12th March at 9pm).
Monarchy sees David Starkey present a gripping biographical narrative of England's royal rulers, with informative insight and original analysis of the gradual emergence of a unique form of government - a constitutional monarchy; something with relevance today in our current political climate.
History Night covers an amazing array of subjects including some outstanding and in-depth programmes on both World Wars. The Somme (23rd and 30th January, 10pm) is a powerful and touching docu-drama recounting in detail the story of the bloodiest day in British military history. Told through the letters, diaries and journals written at the time, the film draws on the thoughts and feelings of the men who lived - and died - there to capture the eyewitness experience of the battle of the Somme.
In Blitz: London's Firestorm (6th February, 10pm) the focus is on the evening of 29th December 1940, when the German Luftwaffe attacked London with devastating results. The story of that awe-inspiring night is told through eyewitness accounts which are brought to life by dramatic reconstructions and CGI.
Other programmes featured include The Da Vinci Detective (20th and 27th February, 10pm) which follows pioneering and controversial scientist Dr Maurizio Seracini on the trail of two fascinating unsolved mysteries and The Michaelangelo Code: Secrets of the Sistine Chapel (5th and 12th March, 10pm).
And don’t forget, with Sky+ you can record any Sky programme at the touch of a button.
