The Coronation On DVD
Relive the sights, sounds and spirit of that unforgettable day of Queen Elizabeth's coronation.
When Queen Elizabeth II was crowned on June 2nd, 1953, many of Britain's leading cinematic artists were commissioned to create the only feature-length technicolor record of the coronation. Network invites you to re-live the pomp and pageantry of this unforgettable day with the DVD release of A Queen is Crowned on the 30th July 2007.
Narrated by Sir Laurence Olivier, with a script from distinguished English dramatist Christopher Fry, A Queen Is Crowned follows the ceremony at Westminster Abbey, where the Queen took the Coronation Oath in front of more than 8,000 guests, including prime ministers and heads of state from around the commonwealth. In addition, the film also follows the new monarch as she makes her way through the celebrations on the streets of London to meet her new subjects.
An estimated three million people lined London’s streets to catch a glimpse of the newly-crowned Queen on her way back to Buckingham Palace in the golden stage coach, and impressive celebrations and street parties were held throughout the UK. The BBC broadcast of this momentous historical event was watched by over 20million people, many crowding around neighbours’ sets to watch television for the very first time.
This Oscar – nominated and BAFTA-winning film brilliantly captures the sights, sounds and the very spirit of that unforgettable day. The musical score, played by the London Symphony Orchestra with Sir Malcolm Sargent conducting, reflects the emotions generated by this extraordinary event.
