Ian McCaskill says, Keep up a warm front this winter.

  • Former weatherman launches joint campaign by Ofgem, Age Concern and energywatch

  • Campaign urges older people to look into changing energy companies

  • Older people not switching supplier as much as the national average

  • Campaign also provides guidance on special services and advice on doorstep selling

After shedding pounds for TV?s ?Celebrity Fit Club?, former weatherman Ian McCaskill  is now urging older people to shed some pounds of their own by switching their gas or electricity supplier in time for winter.

Ian today (Wednesday) launched a campaign aimed at encouraging more of the country?s older people to take advantage of the benefits of competition in the gas and electricity markets which has led to lower bills and better quality of service.

The campaign ? run jointly by energy regulator Ofgem, Age Concern and consumer watchdog, energywatch ? was prompted by an independent survey which showed that older people are not changing their suppliers as much as other groups, 30 per cent compared with a national average of 38 per cent.

Ian said: ?As winter approaches, many older people worry about not being able to keep their homes as warm as they like ? and many go cold rather than use their heating. By changing their gas and electricity supplier older people may be able to save money and get help to keep warm this winter.?

The campaign, which will be rolled out nationally with the help of  Age Concern, will provide older people with the information they need to help them change their supplier as well as:

  • how to get special help from their suppliers
  • how to make their homes more energy efficient
  • guidance on the other services provided by their suppliers, and
  • advice on how to get the best from doorstep salespeople.

The materials ? including leaflets, posters and fridge magnets ? will also be distributed through energywatch?s helpline on 08459 060708.
