Nursing Home Care Charges
The Government has given an indication of how much residents in nursing homes
might expect the NHS to pay towards their nursing care. The proposed bands £35,
£70 and £110, with people being assessed as to which band they go into. The
funding for this has been averaged out at £85 per head for the 35,000 residents
in nursing homes who fund themselves.
Gordon Lishman, Director General of Age Concern England, commented on the new
charges:
"Many older people who are paying around £350 to £400 a week for nursing
home fees will find these new proposed figures extremely hard to swallow.
"This banding approach raises many more questions than it answers. Our
chief concern is that if the budget set for nursing care is inadequate, there
may be pressure on nurses to push people into a lower band or to operate a
waiting list system.
"Another key concern is that the Government's definition of nursing care
does not cover the costs of the nursing tasks performed under the supervision of
a nurse, but done by a nursing assistant. Tasks such as dressing ulcers and
pressure sores, which anyone would reasonably regard as nursing tasks, might
still have to be paid for."
