Prepare For Winter
Gear up for winter and give bad weather the cold shoulder ? that?s the message from Age Concerns up and down the country. Age Concerns across the UK will urge older people to prepare for winter by arming themselves with vital information on local and national community services and support available during this difficult time of year.
The cold weather still accounts for an appalling number of deaths amongst older people in the UK. Last winter 25,000* older people died in England and Wales. Fuel poverty, illness and the unhappiness that comes from being isolated and lonely, make the prospect of winter a pitiful one for many older people.
Preparing for winter in advance will help older people and their families to learn about important, life-enhancing community services and ways to stay safe, warm and well when it matters most.
Over 400 local Age Concerns across the country work to raise money and provide vital support services to older at all times of the year and especially in winter when older people are most at risk. Your local Age Concern will offer some of the following services:
- Information and advice;
- Face to face benefits advice;
- Befriending services;
- Luncheon clubs and day centres;
- Emergency heater loans;
- Advice on repairs.
