Quality Care Homes
'Quality Matters - Striving for Excellence in Home Care' reports back from the conference Help the Aged organised on the subject in June 2001, and examines what older people themselves define as quality care.
The report comes at a time when the quality of care is high on the public agenda with the National Care Standards Commission and the development of new standards for home care. Agencies providing home care will for the first time be required to register themselves and be subject to inspection.'Quality Matters - Striving for Excellence in Home Care' makes the case for the following recommendations:
- Local authorities to develop a programme of consultation with their older service users- in particular people from hard to reach groups such as black and minority ethnic groups and people who are unable to attend meetings without assistance.
- A national learning programme to share good practice across local authorities and independent care providers
- Improved training, conditions and pay for care workers in order to and exceed the new standards
- Government investment in social care to match NHS investment.
