Wheelchair Warning

A warning has been issued to health professionals in NHS trusts, nursing homes and Primary Care trusts following the discovery of a fault that may lead to wheelchair users burning their hands.

Not only may burns be inflicted on users who touch the metal shroud of the battery charger connector, but exposure to the heat can stop the charger working altogether.

This is because the plastic materials inside the connector may stop the charger working.

The alert follows several reports of a connection device for battery chargers overheating on Scandinavian Mobility powered wheelchairs. All those delivered between the dates 14 August 1998 and 31 May 2000 may pose the risk of burning.

The firm has pledged to exchange units and re-imburse reasonable fitting costs so that replacement can start as soon as possible.
