Classic Car Chase Movies
It may be one of the most used and abused movie clichés, but when done correctly, the car chase scene can be the highlight of any film.
Ever since the automobile and movie businesses were born alongside each other in the 1890s, car chases have been putting the motion into motion pictures.
The first ever movie car chase was in a 1903 black and white, silent film called Runaway Match. It wasn't the most exciting chase ever filmed, but it belongs in the history books anyway, purely for getting there first. A couple elope but are pursued by the bride's father - they escape when the father's chauffeur driven car breaks down.
Steve McQueen’s classic Bullitt began developing the art of on-screen motorised mayhem in the late 60s and in the past 40 years numerous changes and adaptions have occurred to improve the chase for the paying public.
Cameras have grown smaller, which means they can be mounted in places where the sense of speed is maximised. Stunt performers have grown bolder as safety advances allow them to simulate more and more dangerous antics. Physical effects have grown more sophisticated so that cars can be destroyed in ever more spectacular ways. Finally, digital imaging allows filmmakers to wipe away evidence of rigging, which has heightened the excitement even more.
It may be one of the most used and abused movie clichés, but when done correctly, the car chase scene can be the highlight of any film.
