A Hertfordshire WalkPosted on: 07 May 2008 by Gareth Hargreaves
A short circular walk around the village of Bricket Wood.
Enjoy the surrounding countryside which otherwise you may not have discovered on this short distance walk.
Distance: 3 miles / 4.8km
Route: Riverside Way Car Park Drop Lane, Netherwylde Farm, Drop Lane, Riverside Way, Moor Mill.
The numbers in red refer to the map at the end of the page.
Meet in the 1 Riverside Way car park in Drop Lane, or in the Moor Mill car park if eating there - parking at the Landlord's discretion.
With your back to Moor Mill, walk along the path into 2 Smug Oak Lane. If coming from Riverside Way car park, turn right into Drop Lane then right again, over the river and right again along a footpath 3 (Public Bridleway 6) or straight across the road from Moor Mill.
Towards the end of the path on the right there is a stile to a field. 4 Take this footpath walking straight ahead, when two other paths join this, do not take the wide path ahead, keep to the right and follow the very narrow path which is next to the edge of the field, with the telegraph poles in, this continues along with a hedge and a ditch on your left.
At the far end of the field veer to the right with trees on your left and continue until you see a telegraph pole on your left.
Immediately after this on the left there is a 5 small wooden footbridge, set slightly back from the field - go across this and follow the very narrow path along to the end. Go up a short embankment onto a path.
6 Turn left over a footbridge across the River Colne until you get to a 'T' junction.
7 Turn right, passing Netherwylde Farm on your right and take the upper road signposted to 'the Dutch Barn', 8 continue on the top track past the Dutch Barn, and descend to the galvanized gate which leads to the footpath along the side of the open field. Continue ahead past a blue Aldenham Cycle Loop sign on your right.
9 At the corner (bend) - look right as there are coloured path markers on an unused stile - take right fork which is the footpath across the field toward the 10 iron bridge. Go across the bridge and veer 11 right along the path, with the river on your right, until you reach the Ford and you are back into Drop Lane. Beware of traffic.
12 Turn right and a little way down on your right is Riverside Way, go over the footbridge and veer to the left. Follow the path along, crossing over a footbridge and continue right to the end and back to the 1 car park, which can be approached from Riverside Way on the left - there is no need to go back into Smug Oak Lane and left into Drop Lane, or return to Moor Mill for a drink or meal.
