Afghanistan: Karzai says Nato/US cannot defeat Taliban

Posted on: 13 June 2010 by Gareth Hargreaves

A report in the New York Times yesterday said the President Karzai had let it be known in private conversations (not that private if it appeared in the NYT) that he doubted whether US and Nato forces had any chance of defeating the Taliban!

Nice one Karzai! Interesting things are unfolding in Afghanistan, the US and the UK! So the billions of pounds of money fed into his corrupt regime and the hundreds of young soldiers’ lives lost has all been to no avail – that’s going to make the lives of grieving widows, orphans and families a lot happier isn’t it. Not only have they lost their loved ones but the loss was totally unnecessary!

This is the war that Bush and Blair (and more recently Brown and Obama) told us was an essential measure to protect us at home. Now it looks like we’ll be out of there sooner rather than later. You don't have to dig too deep to see signs that the new government is putting together an exit strategy. Seeing William Haig (Foreign Secretary) all cagey on TV this morning when quizzed on government policy in Afghanistan; and the fact that the most senior civil servant at the Ministry of Defence and the Head of our Armed Forces are being replaced by a new team who will undertake the review of our defence strategy and spending.

This in itself is a good thing and the fact that we may be giving up this war and bringing our forces home a blessed relief. No more deaths being acknowledged though the streets Wootton Bassett would not be missed! But this is not the issue – the issue is why the hell we were there in the first place. This all stems from the manic Bush/Blair alliance; this coterie of the self righteous, which saw terrorists under every street bin and wrapped its paranoia up with religious fervour, embarked us on a ‘holy war’ to bring democracy to a people who didn’t want it!

Hopefully this government will get us out of Afghanistan as quickly as possible and the law will be changed so that ‘mad eyed prime ministers’ cannot take us to war without the consent of Parliament and the Queen. If nothing else happens then this might make the tragic losses suffered during these two wars (Iraq and Afghanistan) vaguely worthwhile!

Let’s hope William Haig gets us out tout de suite and be damned what the Americans think.

All our so called leaders, Bush, Blair, Brown and Obama should hold their heads in shame at the horrors they have inflicted on these countries and our soldiers. Still I doubt whether they sleep well at night – I certainly wouldn’t if I had that many deaths on my conscience!
