Bare your souls before the public alter of equalityPosted on: 01 June 2010 by Mark O'haire
So poor old David Laws has fallen on his sword for being gay! The new coalition government has hit the first set of buffers and is still rebounding. Laws is a great loss to this new team and the knock-on effect will go on and on for weeks.
How did this all happen – well it was the good old ‘Torygraph’ (The Telegraph) that broke the story on Friday and by Saturday he was gone. His reasons? So he could “spend time with his friends and family” (that old chestnut!).
So what is all the fuss about? Well Laws claimed £40,000 of public money to pay for board in London over a period of six years at his secret lover’s house in Kennington. This didn’t cut the mustard with the Telegraph and the story ran.
Did he break any rules? Only time will tell. Need he have been ‘ousted’ by the paper? No. Was he a very, very silly man? Yes! In today’s world, whether you’re gay or not isn’t really that important – people are accepted for who they are and not what they are.
Now the real losers in this debacle will be David Cameron and Nick Clegg – they needed this like they needed a hole in the head. Laws was a very valuable man in the coalition team and he will be missed – he had a Double First from Cambridge in Economics and a successful City career before becoming an MP.
His space is being filled by Danny Alexander from the Liberal Democrats (the short lived Secretary of State for Scotland!) and he too studied Economics at university! Better still he is married and has two young children and lives in Chippenham – big ticks in the Tory box for this!
Hopefully this will soon settle down and it will be business as normal (did I say normal?). What Cameron must now do is search the corridors of power and find out if there are anymore ‘nasty’s that are going to come out of the cupboard to scuttle his little ship.
So come on boys and girls in the government – any cross-dressers, lesbians, gays, wife beaters, husband beaters, sadomasochists or chip butty eaters out there? If so come forward and bare your souls before the public alter of equalities and get it out in the open.
We can’t have any more cock-ups can we (did I really say that!?).
Right or wrong?
News broke yesterday of the Israeli attack on the aid ships trying to get to Gaza. Who is right and who is wrong?
In the past Israel have long taken a high handed attitude to international law and condemnation principally because they have the unswerving support in the USA but they may have gone too far this time.
Ten people are dead, on what appears to be an attack on an aid convoy of ships in international waters. Later news is showing that there were 500 people on board the largest ship – were these aid workers and doctors or were they armed supporters supporting Hamas?
As time passes we will get to know more. If it’s then shown that this is just another example of Israeli high handedness then they should be condemned by the international community including the USA.
On the other hand, if they were supply ships feeding terrorism then they only have themselves to blame.
What a bloody mess the Middle East is!
