Posted on: 16 June 2008 by Gareth Hargreaves

Spain win Group D with a game to spare leaving Russia and Sweden to battle it out for second place.

Spain booked their passage to Euro 2008’s quarter-finals thanks to a last-gasp winner from David Villa against Sweden.

Villa’s goal, coupled with Russia’s win over Greece, means the Spaniards are guaranteed a place in the last eight despite a below-par performance.

Greece’s defeat sees the current holders crashing out at the earliest stage.

Spain have finished top of Group D with a game to spare thanks to Valencia striker David Villa.

His late goal gave the Spaniards a 2-1 win over Sweden to guarantee a quarter-final, avoiding Group C winners Holland.

Spain took an early lead when Fernando Torres poked home David Silva’s cross after 15 minutes.

But Sweden responded well and levelled when Zlatan Ibrahimovic met Fredrick Stoor’s cross on 34 minutes.

Sweden 1-2 Spain

Greece 0-1 Russia

Greece 0-2 Sweden

Spain 4-1 Russia

Spain were far less stylish than they had been in despatching Russia in their opening match and were frustrated by the stubborn Swedish defence.

But Villa's goal, his fourth of the tournament, was still enough to put his side into the quarter-finals.

Sweden now will take on Russia in the final group game to decide who will join the Spanish in the quarter-finals.

Russia beat Greece 1-0 to send the holders crashing out early.

Konstatin Zvryanov scored the winner from close range in the 34th minute after Sergei Semak cashed in on Greek keeper Antonis Nikopolidis’s mistake.

Sweden will be slight favourites to advance as they only need a draw in Innsbruck on Wednesday to go through from the group stages.

Greece were unable to repeat the heroics that stunned Europe and resulted in them clinching the title in Portugal four years ago – paying a heavy price for a lack of cutting edge and attacking ambition.
