Knit For Premature BabiesPosted on: 19 June 2008 by Gareth Hargreaves
Can you knit, crochet or sew? Then find out how you can volunteer to help premature babies and their parents.
'Bonnie Babies' makes and sends tiny premature clothes, blankets and sadly burial outfits to UK special baby care units, and also to parents who need their support.
They are a non-profit voluntary organisation, depending entirely on hard work, kindness and dedication from members and friends without whose support none of their work would be possible.
Bonnie Babies was started six years ago in memory of the babies that Debby and John Lamont lost. From a few volunteers it has grown from strength to strength to over 1,000 members and rising.
Currently they send parcels to about 80 hospitals in Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales. Any hospital not on their list but which needs items please contact Bonnie Babies through their website, given below, and they will be able to help.
Are You Crafty?
Volunteers knit, crochet and sew miniature premature items for special baby care units. They also make burial gowns for the little ones who sadly don't make it. 24,797 items were made and sent to hospitals in 2007.
Items that volunteers make include blankets, cot sheets, quilts, cardigans, bibs, bonnets, mitts, booties, suits, capes, ponchos, shawls, angel pockets, burial buntings, keepsake bags, cribs/Moses baskets, Christmas items, hearts, angels, teddies and dolls.
Bonnie Babies need your help to do more, if you can knit, crochet or sew, or know someone who does and would like to join in. You can visit their message forums, or send finished items to the address below, remembering to add your name and address so Bonnie Babies can let you know they have arrived.
What Can You Donate?
Do you have an odd ball of wool, a spare button or some ribbon, lace or material you would like to donate? There are many items you could donate, and all items are very much appreciated and help in making many tiny items.
The first wedding dress donated to Bonnie Babies was made into 97 tiny burial outfits, so sad yet that is 97 parents who will have something very special for their little one.
Used postage stamps are also wanted. These can be sent to the address below, then Bonnie Babies can send them on to turn into funds. If you have the time please separate stamps into class / UK / foreign.
Bonnie Babies also welcome monetary donations to help towards running costs, including postage for the parcels.
If you would like to donate any of the items that Bonny Babies could use please post to:
