Protect the vulnerable but send the rest back to workPosted on: 02 June 2010 by Mark O'haire
Last week I wrote my blog supporting David Cameron and Nick Clegg’s plans to get people off benefits and back to work. What a response we got, both for and against my views. Nobody actually called me a fascist, but it came close.
One lady said that I had voiced what most people felt but were afraid to say - well I said it.
For more years than I can remember we have seen the benefits culture grow and grow in this country and seen families emerge who are actually proud of the fact that they don’t work and live off other taxpayers taxes.
I have always thought this wrong in the extreme and it should be stopped. We don’t do the country any good, nor the taxpayer and least of all the unemployed. The next big ‘payout’ was the disability benefits and the number of people claiming these, is a mind boggling 2.5 million people!
This is a cost the nation simply can’t afford – it’s too damn much! One writer said they thought I had lived my nice middle-class life and mixed with nice middle-class people and never experienced hardship or illness.
Just how wrong could they be – I have lived my entire life with depressive illness and had two treatable breakdowns. I’ve had great success in my career and some pretty bad failures. I’ve been rich and I’ve been broke – to the point of going down the Underground to end it all in front of a train!
All this happened in the past 40 years – my working life. In that time I got through, asked nobody for help (except the doctors) and I’ve never had time off from work and never claimed anything from the state. I was brought up in a culture where you had to make your own way and the person you could rely on was yourself.
I’ve never said to anyone or written that we should be so harsh in our society; that those who really are ill or unable to work should not be helped by the state. But equally, those who just take advantage of the system and work out the way to live ‘work free’ should have all their benefits stopped and they should be put back on the job market.
If there are no jobs then they should do community work to repay the benefits. We do nobody any favours letting them wallow in idleness.
Protect those who genuinely can’t work or are really ill but put the rest back on the market.
A palindrome reads the same backwards as forward. The video below reads the exact opposite backwards as forward. Not only does it read the opposite, the meaning is the exact opposite..
This is only a 1 minute, 44 second video and it's brilliant. Make sure you read as well as listen...forward and backward.
This is a video that was submitted in a contest by a 20-year old. The contest was entitled "U@50" and this video won second place. When they showed it, everyone in the room was awe-struck and broke into spontaneous applause.
It's so simple and yet so brilliant. Take a minute and watch it.
