Colleagues at B&Q Longwell Green made sure that this would be a birthday to remember for Albert by arranging for a vintage Bentley, one of Albert’s favourite cars, to take the birthday boy to work in style.

Albert was met by his colleagues, Store Manager Alan Lamberm and customers fond of the 90 year old, who presented him with a one-of-a-kind silver B&Q apron to mark the landmark birthday. A birthday cake spelling out 90 was also baked in honour of the Store Greeter at the Bristol store.

Albert has worked for B&Q for over 23 years, starting at the spritely age of 67 after retiring from a career in the print industry. Albert began work at just 14 in the general print trade working at a number of national newspapers on Fleet Street including The Guardian newspaper.

Albert originally started work in 1990 at B&Q Sutton where he served as the Car Park Attendee for thirteen years until he left for Bristol Longwell Green as the Store Greeter.  As a social person Albert enjoys meeting different people and now has several close friends through his work.  He also enjoys DIY and has completed numerous home improvement projects through the years which help him to advise customers in-store.

To still be working at aged 90 is no mean feat and we’re proud to have him in our team here at Longwell Green. Albert is a much loved colleague who does a great job greeting our customers and passing on his home improvement knowledge. He really is a shining example of the fact that age is really just a number and that you’re only as old as you feel.”

B&Q is the UK’s largest home improvement retailer and proud of the diversity within its workforce with over a quarter (28%) of store employees aged over 50. As a founding member of the Employers Forum on Age, a network created by employers to remove barriers to an age-balanced workforce, B&Q is a retail leader when it comes to championing older workers.
