An Interview With Tom May

Newcastle Falcons winger Tom May will be pushing himself to the limit next week in aid of children’s charity Just For Kids.

At this time of year, the majority of rugby players will be relaxing on a beach, sipping cocktails with their feet up after another gruelling season.

But instead of enjoying a well-earned break, Newcastle Falcons winger Tom May has decided to set himself the biggest personal challenge of his life.

The 29-year-old will be aiming to cycle from Newcastle to Twickenham via the 12 Premiership clubs- a total of 541 miles in a week, all in aid of children’s charity Just For Kids.

"The seasons over but I find it hard to switch off from rugby," he tells 50connect.  "We’re so focused for nine months and then suddenly it’s all over and you don’t really know what to do with yourself."

“I wanted to do something a little different, but also something that would really challenge me, both physically and mentally. To be honest, it’s only just sinking in how tough it’s going to be, but it’s for a really great cause.  If I’m finding the going tough I only need to picture the children and I know that’ll really spur me on.”

After a visit to a teenage cancer ward last Christmas, Tom decided he wanted to help and being inspired by the children.

Tom May “They really make you realise how lucky you are in life; they were all so brave and strong. It really had an effect on me and it’s really inspired me to do something to try and help.”

Tom will be aiming to raise £40,000 for children who have suffered abuse, neglect and carry disabilities, as well as those who require extra care or guidance. With over 230 appearances in rugby, Tom also expelled the myth that it was going to be a breeze for him.

“The challenge is important to me; I like being physically tested whether it’s in rugby, in the gym or elsewhere.  In rugby we train hard for short, sharp bursts. This is a completely different type of fitness."

“It’s all geared towards power and endurance-based fitness. I wasn’t allowed to train during the season so I’m only going to get 10 days of proper training in and I suppose I’m banking on my rugby fitness to see me through.  It’s not ideal but if it makes me struggle and really dig-in then all the better. I’ve still got to get used to the bike, saddle soreness and after a few practice rides I’m already getting a stiff back so it’s going to be far from comfortable."

“It’s without doubt going to be the hardest thing I’ve ever done.”

Ant & Dec have taken a break from filming Britain’s Got Talent to record a personal message of support whilst fans from around the world have joined a special Facebook event page “The Tom May Cycle Challenge” to leave messages of support.

Tom will be leaving Newcastle on May 28th and arriving back in London on June 4th. Donations can be made directly to sponsor Tom's trip by logging on to www.justgiving.com/tomsjustforkidsbikeride.
