England have named an experienced squad for this week's European Seniors Championship in Ireland.
England have named one new cap in their squad for this week’s European Men’s Seniors Team Championships at Shannon Golf Club in Ireland.
Phillip Slater, a member of the Cheshire team that recently won the Northern Counties Seniors Championship, will join an experienced six-man line-up alongside Douglas Arnold, Gordon Broster, David Lane, Chris Reynolds and Alan Squires for the event taking place between 13th and 16th August.
England Team
Doug Arnold (Copthorne)
Gordon Broster (Hoylake)
David Lane (Goring & Streatley)
Chris Reynolds (Littlestone)
Philip Slater (Sandiway)
Alan Squires (Oldham)
The 57-year-old made an impact in 2006, his first year as a senior, when he helped Cheshire retain the English Seniors County Championship at Lincoln Golf Club in Torksey when he scored 5.5 points from six matches.
In 2007, Slater won the Cheshire Seniors Championship and finished tied fifth in the Scottish Seniors, while he finished equal fourth in the individual rankings when Cheshire won the recent Northern Counties qualifying at Fairhaven.
Current Sussex Seniors champion Arnold is a three times English Seniors champion and has represented England in the European Team Championships since it began two years ago and in every Seniors Home Internationals since its inception in 2002.
Slater and Arnold are joined by 67-year-old Lane who is one of the top senior golfers in Europe. Like Arnold, he has three English titles to his credit as well as two Scottish championships under his belt.
The 64-year-old Broster, Reynolds and Squires, both 59, complete the team of six for England who will be gunning for glory in County Clare.
When the inaugural European Men’s Seniors Team Championship was held in Finland, England finished third behind Scotland and Ireland, while last year in Slovenia they again took bronze as Ireland triumphed.
Spectators are encouraged to attend the championship at Shannon Golf Club, with free entry every day.
