BT Extends The Reach Of Broadband

btexchange

From 6th September 2004 BT is extending the reach of ADSL 512k ,the technology behind the most common form of Broadband. What this means is an extra one million people who previously could not get broadband will now be able to. Previously the ADSL reach limit was 6km from the broadband enabled exchange. Now BT is extending this so anyone who wants broadband and is connected to a enabled exchange should be able to get the service. Also the 1Mb service is getttting extended now anyone under 6km from the exchange will be able to apply for it, previously the limit was 4km.

Following successful trials in Milton Keynes and in the Scottish Highlands, BT is now confident that just about anyone connected to a DSL-enabled exchange will now be able to get broadband.'By pushing the boundaries on broadband reach we are building on our exchange upgrade rollout programme which means the remaining gaps in the broadband Britain jigsaw are getting smaller and smaller,' said Alison Ritchie, BT chief broadband officer.
By next summer, BT expects the availability of ADSL broadband in the UK to be at 99.4 pct.

According to BT, this means that all but 0.2 per cent of homes and businesses connected to an ADSL exchange should be able to get broadband.

Although confident about the extended reach of ADSL, BT also expects that one in five people living beyond heformer limit will need a visit by a BT engineer to make sure the service can work. BT won't charge for the visit, but it accepts that, in a "small number of cases" it still may not be possible to provide a reliable broadband service.

This is excellent news. By recognising the dynamic nature of different areas, BT is allowing almost everybody a fair chance at broadband and bridging the divide.
