Online DVD Rental
Anyone who's woken up in a cold sweat remembering a rented DVD is two weeks overdue should think about no time limit online rental websites.
Computing Which? looked at the seven most popular DVD rental websites to see which offered best value for money, range of movies on offer, performance (including customer service and DVD quality), and additional features offered by each site.
While each of the sites was easy to use, there were variations between the number of DVDs on offer, browsing mechanisms, listings and genre arrangements. And although the £10 flat fee makes it a tempting offer, the queuing system means you can't always guarantee what film you'll get.
The most popular site by far, for sheer volume of titles available, was www.screenselect.co.uk with 25,000 plus DVDS available for hire. However, since testing, www.lovefilm.co.uk has increased its range to 24,500, making it a close contender. www.moviechoices.cm was liked for its easy to use browsing mechanism and www.DVDs365.com for its recommended listings and genre arrangements such as 'Top 50 Most Rented'.
Jessica Ross, editor, Computing Which? said, "With a typical flat fee of £10 for a basic one-DVD-at-a-time subscription, renting online is a tempting offer. Offering thousands of films with no time limit on their return, these services are great value for money, especially if you watch lots of films.
"However, if you're not prepared to order in advance and take pot luck with what arrives, your local video store is probably still your best bet. That said, this is a competitive, quick-changing market with new players and features appearing all the time, so shop around and make use of the free trials to find a service that suits you."
