This New Year saw a record number of SMS text sent throughout the UK.

As 2005 began to the popping of champagne corks, rockets lighting up the sky, and the dulcet tones of Auld Langsyne, busy fingers were at work once again, as we shared New Year celebrations with friends and family via teext message across the UK.

The total number of messages sent from midnight 31st December 2004 to midnight 1st January 2005 was 133 million, the highest ever daily total recorded by the Mobile Data Association (MDA).  Person-to-person texts sent across the UK GSM network operators on New Year’s Day 2005 show an increase of 20% compared with the 2004 figure of 111 million.

Over the last five years text.it (www.text.it) has witnessed text messaging grow from a popular craze to becoming an essential communication tool, inclusive to all age groups.  2004 has seen more text messages sent per day than at any time since records began, with an average of 68.5 millionn text messages sent per day compared with 56.2 million in 2003, 46 million in 2002 and 33.4 million in 2001.
