Explore Kent's Coast
A nine-day programme of half-term activities celebrating the Kent coast provides a unique opportunity for families to explore the county’s rich marine heritage.
Kent Coastal Week which runs from October 20–28th
is packed with more than 30 on and offshore events including seal watching,
wildlife walks and family fun days.
During the week, which has been co-ordinated by the Kent Coastal Network, the
Thanet Coast Project will lead several exploratory tours and activities along
the chalk shores and also host The Big Draw – a community art event at Viking
Bay, Broadstairs on October 20th to create this year’s largest sand sculpture.
Get
out on the water for a boat trip or watch the Kent seals in their natural
habitat on the infamous Goodwin Sands off Ramsgate; join the Rock Doc walk at
Pegwell Bay and learn about the ancient wonders of the rocks, chalk cliffs,
flints and fossils or head for the Sandwich and Pegwell Bay Country Park for the
Waders and Wildfowl guided walk.
A World War II heritage trail reveals the remains of the coastal defences
between Seasalter and Whitstable (Wellington boots essential!) with an
opportunity to look at the sea forts from the water. The Kent Wildlife Trust’s
Reculver visitor centre is also organising events focusing on the changing
shoreline, with seashore safaris on the beach.
On the North Kent marshes the RSPB invites you to witness bird migration and
take a guided walk around the reserves while further up the coast the Riverside
Country Park hosts a family fun day to create a clay and paper seascape.
From the White Cliffs to Romney Marsh there are several heritage and wildlife
events arranged by the White Cliffs and Romney Marsh Countryside Projects, the
RSPB and Kent Wildlife Trust. And there’s even a chance to learn about marine
life without getting your feet wet at the Marine Family Fun Day at Tyland Barn
Visitor Centre, Maidstone on October 25th.
