Go Green Before You Pack

Help the woodland by recycling your favourite beachside reads.

With eco-tourism at its height, saving the environment doesn't have to be about the type of holiday you go on.

When it comes to packing holiday essentials this summer, ethical website GreenMetropolis.com is appealing to holiday makers to recycle their holiday reading to help benefit conservation charity, the Woodland Trust.

For every book sold from the website, GreenMetropolis.com will donate 5p to the Woodland Trust.

Says website founder Barry Crow: "Doing your bit can be as simple as buying and recycling via the web. Tourists are encouraged to leave nothing but footprints in the sand and we want to ensure that books are not thrown away, or left at the resort at the end of a holiday. By recycling them on GreenMetropolis.com you can help reduce the burden of paper on the environment. For about every 300 books purchased from the site one tree will be spared."

Paperback books are available to buy for £3.75 each and once read, can be re-sold through the website, earning sellers £3 per book. That translates into a couple of poolside drinks or a bus ticket from Delhi to Katmandhu depending on your style of travel!

Holidays can be the only time we have to get stuck into a good book. Busy lifestyles mean that many people only rediscover reading on holiday when relaxing for two stress-free weeks on the beach.

However, there are some titles that are more appropriate for holiday reading than others. The top holiday read listed on the website is The Beach by Alex Garland while the book best left at home is Jaws by Peter Benchley.

Barry adds, "Avoid books about disasters, and don't be tempted to take anything to do with work or business as these can have a negative impact on your holiday."
