Golden Globes Hint At UK Oscar Success

Kate Winslet triumphs twice at glittering Golden Globes ceremony during a great night for the UK.

The 2009 Golden Globes kicked off Hollywood’s lengthy awards season in style on 11th January. Traditionally, Globes success is a strong hint of later Oscar victory and if this proves to be the case this, year will be a triumphant one for the UK.

Kate Winslet struck gold twice, taking the trophy for Best Actress for Revolutionary Road, directed by her husband Sam Mendes, and Best Supporting Actress for The Reader.

Colin Farrell Wins Best Comedy Actor © HFPA Golden Globe AwardsOther UK success came for Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire, hotly tipped for the Best Film Oscar. Irishman Colin Farrell won Best Actor in a musical or comedy for In Bruges, but is unlikely to get an Oscar nod and the British winning streak continued with Sally Hawkins picking up the award for Best Actress in a musical or comedy for her role in Mike Leigh's Happy Go Lucky.

There were no surprises in the actors’ categories with Mickey Rourke taking Best Actor for The Wrestler and Heath Ledger, who died last year at the age of just 28, winning Best Supporting Actor for The Dark Knight. Ledger’s wonderfully manic turn as Batman's nemesis The Joker is currently odds on favourite to win only the second posthumous Oscar in the ceremony’s 80 year history.

There are still countless awards ceremonies to go, including those voted for by industry insiders- the numerous guilds and critic groups, but if the Golden Globes are anything to go by, Winslet who has been nominated and overlooked five times for an Academy Award must be in with a good chance of finally taking home at least one gong.
