Many people believe that living this way is only about healthy eating or exercise regularly. However, there is more to this. A healthy lifestyle should entail taking care of your wellbeing physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

This article puts together a list of 10 easy ways you can lead a wholesome, healthy lifestyle.

1. Eating a healthy diet

The fundamental basis for healthy living is good nutrition. Healthy eating entails consuming more fresh fruits, vegetables and having a balanced diet. You should accompany carbohydrate-rich meals with lean proteins. Avoid processed foods. Cut down on your intake of carbs and refined grains such as white rice, pasta, and white bread, which are low in nutrients and are bad for your body. Instead, opt for the unrefined complex brown carbs such as brown rice, and brown bread, whose nutrients are still intact. Reduce your intake of oily, sugary foods, soda and caffeine. A healthy diet keeps you free from nutritional or heart diseases, obesity as well as diabetes.

2. Physical exercise

It is okay if you do not have time to go to the gym for workouts. There are other simple things you can do as part of your physical exercise routine and still make a difference in your healthy living goal. For instance, you can dance in your living room, walk to the park with your kids or dog, take the stairs instead of the elevator,  or ride your bike to work or go for hikes. Do this every day, and you will reap the benefits. You will enjoy improved eyesight, an increased lifespan, reduced risk of diseases and enhanced bone density.

3. Get enough sleep

It is essential to get a good and quality night sleep of 7 to 9 hours to avoid health problems such as fatigue, obesity, diabetes, as well as heart and immune deficiency diseases. If you have trouble sleeping and feel sleepy while doing your daily chores, try techniques such as:- avoiding taking stimulants such as caffeine and nicotine in hours close to bedtime; darken your bedroom, and practice simple exercises before sleep.

4. Meditation

Your mental health affects the quality of your life by altering your way of thinking, your feelings as well as your behavior. Meditating is a way of training your mind and acts as a remedy for when you feel stressed, down or overwhelmed. It helps you attain the ability to accept life as it is and manage stress by calming your mind and soul.

5. Avoid tobacco use

Both active and passive tobacco smoking put your health at risk. Tobacco affects your internal organs thus reducing your life expectancy. To enhance the quality of your life, quit smoking.

6. Avoid excessive use of alcohol

If you want to live a long healthy life, you must limit your consumption of alcoholic drinks. Excessive use of alcohol has adverse consequences such as loss of sleep, loss of appetite, liver cirrhosis, cancer of the liver, and fatal automobile accidents.

7. Drink water

60% of our body is made up of water. You need to take about 8-10 glasses of water a day to stay hydrated and enable your body to carry out its functions of waste removal, and circulation of nutrients and oxygen among many other benefits. Keep a portable and reusable water bottle on sight to act as a reminder to drink water regularly.

8. Engage in leisure activities

Spend some of your time doing things that interest you. Read more, go on trips, go shopping, spend time with your friends and engage in your hobby or favorite sports activity. These actions ensure that you put stress at bay, enjoy your life and feel more fulfilled.

9. Keep good company

To live a healthy life, you must surround yourself with other healthy people. Cut yourself from toxic relationships and friendships that only pull you down. Social support from friends and family who share the same goals with you will keep you more motivated and encouraged to achieve your goal of leading a healthy lifestyle. Involve people who are close to you when planning for walks or healthy meals.

10.  Think positively

Stay away from negativity and focus on maintaining a positive attitude in everything you do. Do not spend your energy caring what other people think because what you feel about yourself is the only thing that matters when making choices that affect YOU. You will boost your general well-being when you prioritize yourself. Be contented and pleased with both your small and big achievements.
