If you are thinking about purchasing ready made curtains online, it is important that you have done your research and that you know exactly what you’re looking for. This will help to avoid making the wrong choice, which can be quite expensive when you consider that you either have to pay to return the curtains or you’re simply stuck with them. In this article, we have provided a basic guide to ensure that your online purchase doesn’t go astray.

How to measure your windows

We recommend using a metal ruler, as this will provide maximum accuracy for your measurements. You should also have an idea of the kind of curtains that you want, as this could cause the measurements to slightly differ. If you’re going to use a pole with finials, for example, you should install the pole prior to taking any measurements. If you want to pull the drapes open completely during the day, on the other hand, the pole should be installed at least 12 to 15cm over the side of the window. Find the width by measuring the pole (don’t include the finials).

How to measure the drop
The next measurement you need to take is the drop. If you intend to hang ready made curtains on a pole, measure from the top of the pole down to the spot where you want the fabric to hang. So, if you want them to finish just below the window, this is where you stop measuring. If your drapes will be hung on rings, you will need to measure the drop from the bottom on the rings (or the tops of the tabs). If you’re using tracks, you will need to measure from the top of the track to the desired length.

Understanding curtain width rules
Now that you have your measurements in order, you will need to determine the look you would like the drapes to have. The standard widths for curtains are 168 or 228cm. Poles, on the other hand, come in a few different widths – 150 or 210cm. Whilst you can use the same drape width on both size poles, it should be noted that it will look different on each – on the 150cm pole, the fabric will bunch nicely and have room to spread out; on the 210cm pole, the fabric will stretch all the way out and not bunch very much at all.

What to do if they’re too long
Occasionally, you may not be able to find curtains that are the right length for your windows. In these cases, we recommended purchasing the next length down and having them hemmed to fit your measurements. We also felt that it was worth noting that these measurements can apply to pencil pleats, tab top and eyelet drape styles. If you are interested in purchasing another style online, we recommend checking out the supplier’s website; they may provide information on how to take measurements.

When it comes to purchasing ready made curtains online, we hope that you find the above basic guide useful in making your perfect choice. It is important to understand that this doesn’t have to be the difficult task it appears on the surface, you just have to know what you’re doing. Measuring your drapes is the most important step in making the right choice – we always recommend following the rule ‘measure twice, cut once’.
