Gluten-Free Diet Can Help People With Neuropathic Pain

Recommended especially for people with celiac disease and gluten-intolerant people (non-celiac gluten sensitivity, SGNC), the gluten-free diet is not recommended for other people.

Moreover, a diet based on a strict gluten-free diet would not be ideal for health if this diet is not a choice for medical reasons. However, the medical profession does not know all the benefits and risks associated with a gluten-free diet.
According to a preliminary study, published at the 70th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Neurology in Los Angeles, USA, April 21-27, 2018, a gluten-free diet can help protect against the pain of people with neuropathic pain.
Sensitivity to gluten and neuropathy
For people with celiac disease, gluten intolerance is sometimes associated with nerve damage. This most often causes numbness in the limbs and pain. "  Migraines, epileptic seizures or other neurological disorders are sometimes observed ".
Recent discoveries about the gluten-free diet mean that a relatively simple diet change could help relieve the pain symptoms associated with gluten neuropathy.
This latest study shows an association between a self-reported gluten-free diet and less pain, but the results do not show that one causes the other.
People on a strict gluten-free diet are 89% less likely to have neuropathic pain
Gluten sensitivity has been associated with peripheral neuropathy, which is a condition in which a person's peripheral nerves are damaged, often causing weakness, numbness and pain, typically in the hands and feet. When a person has nerve pain that can not be explained otherwise and who has sensitivity to gluten, the diagnosis may be a neuropathy caused by gluten.
The study involved 60 people with an average age of 70 who had gluten-related neuropathy. They were asked about the intensity of their pain, their other neuropathic symptoms, their mental health, and whether they followed a strict gluten-free diet - 33 of the participants had pain with their neuropathy, or 55%.

People on a gluten-free diet were more likely to be pain-free than people who did not follow a strict gluten-free diet. In total, 56% of those without pain were on a gluten-free diet, compared to 21% of people with pain. After adjusting for age, gender, and mental health status, the researchers found that people on a strict diet were 89% less likely to have pain with their neuropathy than people who did not follow the diet.
Finally, this study is promising because it shows that a gluten-free diet can help reduce the risk of pain for people with gluten-induced neuropathy. More research is needed to confirm these findings and to determine if the gluten-free diet has led to pain reduction. This will probably create specific diets and not just for patients with celiac disease.
