How to Love Your Retirement

Posted on: 25 June 2017 by Nate Vickery

With plenty of free time on your hands, you’ll have the chance to meet new people, start new hobbies, spend time with your grandchildren and even travel to all the destinations you’ve always dreamed about.

Have you always been one of those people who loved their job and couldn’t even think about retiring, but somehow, you’ve ended up with a lot of free time on your hands? Worry not, because they don’t call retirement the golden years for nothing. Considering that you don’t have to spend eight hours at work anymore, you’ll have much more time to explore and try out new things you’ve always wanted to experience.

Keep your expectations rational

It’s important that you keep your head cool when thinking about retirement. You may have a couple of more weeks left until retirement and the idea of sleeping in and enjoying a quiet and calm morning may seem rather exciting at first. You may start to think about retirement as the least wonderful thing that will ever happen to you, as well. However, you must keep in mind that every change in life involves a transitional phase. You’ll be working on Friday and not having to go to the office on Monday, or any other day, may feel a bit odd. However, there’s no need to worry because it’s all normal.

At first, you’ll feel a bit lost and confused, but it’s all a part of the transition, since a big part of your identity is tied to your career. Therefore, expect the unexpected. You may not be comfortable at the beginning and might not do everything as you envisioned, but give it a time, and you’ll gradually grow to love the golden years.

Plan in advance

Planning your retirement budget is quite important because this way, you can estimate how much money you’ll have at your disposal. This will help you enjoy retirement even more as you will know what you can afford and make clear plans for your retirement. What’s more, if you’ve thought about taking the Age Pension, knowing the level of your income will be rather useful.

You’ll need to take age pension income test to see whether you’re eligible for an age pension or not, since knowing your assets in advance will come in handy. Furthermore, you could also plan out some low-cost activities, so you wouldn’t have to stress over making ends meet every month.

Look for new hobbies

Retirement is the perfect time for you to completely devote your time to the activities you enjoy. If you’ve always wanted to go horseback riding, you might find a class in your neighborhood and finally pursue a hobby you’ve always wanted to try. Have you always loved plants and enjoyed spending time outdoors? Dedicate your time to gardening and get the best of both worlds. Use the opportunity to read your favorite novels, knit, or attend an art class.

Playing the piano or the violin also sounds like a great way to spend your free time, so be sure to look for hobbies that’ll make you happy and enjoy your retirement to the fullest.

Keep up with friends

Having a full-time job, children while also having to run a household, keeps you busy the entire day, which automatically leaves you with not much time for socializing. This is why retirement is so wonderful. You’ll have all the time in the world to catch up and even schedule regular meet-ups to keep in touch and enjoy the company of your old and potentially new friends. Think about joining the local group, and look for new interesting people you can talk to or do some hobbies together. A book club, a recreation department or a chess club could be perfect ways to socialize and learn something new.

There’s no better way to spend your free time than to travel all the places you’ve never been to. While it may seem as an expensive experience, it does not have to be. If you’re on a budget, traveling for a weekend to see the nearby National Park or the famous sights can be a rather thrilling experience. On the other hand, if money is not an issue, going on a senior cruise can be an adventure of a lifetime.

Final thoughts

Retirement will definitely be the time you’ll enjoy the most. With plenty of free time on your hands, you’ll have the chance to meet new people, start new hobbies, spend time with your grandchildren and even travel to all the destinations you’ve always dreamed about. Therefore, don’t be afraid to start your life away from work, because it’s going to be exhilarating.
