New research revealed the happiest places to live in the UK.’s[i] latest research revealed the top five happiest places to live in the UK are Leigh on Sea, Essex; Farnham, Surrey; Monmouth, Wales; Christchurch, Dorset and Leamington Spa, Warwickshire.

The survey asked people to rank 12 happiness factors including how safe residents feel and how friendly the neighbours are, how good the local services are and the quality of green spaces and cultural activities in the area.

These places are popular with retired people too because they are vibrant towns, with easy access to facilities and amenities and offer welcoming communities with plenty going on.

People often want to relocate in retirement. These five ‘happy’ towns are popular and highlight that good neighbours and local services, access to quality green spaces and cultural activities are key to people’s happiness.

Older people are vulnerable to loneliness and social isolation so moving to an area with a strong sense of community, where they can get out and about easily and meet people can help people live a long and happy retirement.

Earlier this year, academics[ii] found increasing evidence that happiness increases after people reach their 50s and continues into people’s 80s. But according to Age UK[iii] there are 1.2 million chronically lonely older people in the UK, something which can affect people’s health, happiness and wellbeing.

Moving to a new area can give people a new lease of life in retirement but Essex, Surrey and Dorset can be expensive places to move to, especially if people want to buy.

Renting in a retirement development can be an affordable way to relocate. Other benefits include freeing up capital from the sale of a home and not having to worry about ongoing property maintenance.
