Homesitters Ltd conducted research amongst home and pet sitters to find out why they decided to take on the role and what they enjoy about it

People can often worry about being bored and unhappy when they retire, but new research reveals those that take on a new challenge like becoming a home and pet sitter are in fact happier.

We recently carried out research amongst our homesitters which found that 82% of them say the role has made them happier in their retirement – with the top reasons for becoming a homesitter being it enables them to explore different parts of the UK, spend time with pets and get away from their usual routine.

Over half say they have chosen not to have a pet of their own because it’s too much of a tie and some find it too upsetting to lose a pet, which is why 68% say that spending time with pets is the thing they enjoy most about the role. 62% of those that homesit with a partner also say that it allows them to spend more quality time together.

Most homesitters are aged between the ages of 55 and 75 and it’s the ideal flexible role for retirees. Homesitters are employed to stay in people’s homes when they go away, keeping the home secure and looking after any pets.

Almost all (91%) find the extra income they earn from it useful to supplement their pension and 67% say they save money on their own utility bills too.  Most use the extra income to pay for holidays, meals out, treats for the family and other general living expenses.

We’re delighted to find out that most of our homesitters are happier in their retirement because they enjoy the role so much. Keeping busy, meeting new people and exploring new places is a great way to really make the most of your retirement.

The role is flexible so people can fit it in around other priorities such as looking after grandchildren and holidays, and it’s also a fantastic way to spend time with pets. The majority are dogs and cats, but Homesitters have looked after all types of animals from chickens, fish and goats to peacocks, alpacas and various rodents.

Homesitters Ltd is unusual in that all its homesitters are employed by the company, which is why many older people choose to work through us.

When asked what they appreciate most about working for Homesitters Ltd the top reasons were the 24/7 back up support service whilst on assignment, being covered by comprehensive insurance, the professionalism of the team, the preliminary meeting with clients and the sense of belonging to a team.

Our homesitters are our business so it’s important we look after them and give them all the support they need when on assignments. It’s also reassuring for clients to know this and that we provide fully vetted and reliable homesitters.

We have been in business a long time and have built our reputation on having happy clients and homesitters. We operate throughout the UK and are always seeking new home and pet sitters to join the team. We’d encourage retirees who think the role would suit them to get in touch.
