Godfathers of Afro-rock, and the first ever African band to make it at The Marquee Club, announce their first album on a major label in over 30 years – exactly 45 years since their debut UK chart hit ‘Sunshine Day’
Osibisa are globally renowned as the founding godfathers of Afro-rock; their vibrant sound and ground-breaking live performances influenced some of our greatest musical icons, such as Stevie Wonder, Santana, Al Green, The Rolling Stones, Johnny Nash and Bob Marley. For 2021, these forceful pioneers unveil their first new material since 2009, with their highly anticipated new album, ‘New Dawn’, released on 23 April 2021 – 45 years since their debut hit, ‘Sunshine Day’ stormed in to the UK charts. Osibisa founder, Teddy Osei, reunites original member Robert Bailey, with Osibisa veteran, Gregg Kofi Brown, as he directs a fresh new album for 2021. The band also welcome an injection of new talent, as they showcase their first ever females into the previously male dominated band. As the first ever African band to play at the iconic, Marquee Club, it’s poignant that they’re now the first signing to newly formed, Marquee Records. Osibisa celebrate six decades of afrobeat joy and prove that their sound is fresher and stronger than ever – it’s a New Dawn!
Reformed, revamped and reinvigorated, Osibisa of 2020, takes flight from their pioneering Afro-rock ties of old, leaping into multi-genres of rock, reggae, jazz, calypso, pop and soul; whilst weaving their signature African vibes into every melodic fibre. Big band instrumentation, fused with the utter joy that naturally gushes from the culminative work of multiple band members, Osibisa, exude elation from every beat of their music – you can ‘t help but join in the pleasure party.
With a collection of x14 original new songs, ‘New Dawn’ is undoubtedly the strongest, most vibrant Osibisa sound to date, as it delivers a richer, more eclectic diversity of music than we’ve ever heard before from these icons.
